July Club Meeting – Hop Aroma—What is it and how do I get it?
Friday, July 20, 2012 — 7-11pm at Norwood Community Center
Many of today’s American-style beers that we love so much feature a healthy wallop of hop aroma. This month’s program will focus on that part of the brewing equation – what aroma do I want, and how do I get it? We’ll discuss brewing techniques for getting the most bang for your hop buck, as well as how to maintain that aroma. In addition, there are many varieties of hops out there. All have their own unique and wonderful smell. We’ll include aroma samples of as many hop varieties as we can lay our hands on (at least 20, hoping for over 30). This includes not just a sample of the hops to sniff, but also that same hop used as a dry hop, all in the same base beer. (We will be using a non-descript blond ale for this – don’t want any strong malt character to interfere with perception of the hop aroma). Finally, we’ll talk about blending hops to get unique aroma signatures.
Got a hoppy beer that you made? Please bring some to share (and brag about), but be prepared to tell us exactly what hops, how much, and how they were used!
Hop Aroma – What is it and how do I get it? from Bosmo on Vimeo.
