Hofbraühaus Tapping – Feb 29

BBL has been invited to tap the ceremonial keg of Maibock at Hofbraühaus this month! Lots of Bloats needed in Bloatware to support this event. Founding Member Ray Spangler will tap the keg with Bosmo’s help. Assemble at 6:30 / Parade with much flag waving and fanfare at 7:00 PM. We have tables reserved right in front of the keg and Bloats in attendance get a complimentary pour (about half glass) from the ceremonial keg as it’s tapped!

Come down for dinner, bring the family and join us as we celebrate this ritual and the coming of Spring!

Bockfest Homebrew Competition – Saturday March 3, 2012

The Bloatarian Brewing League will again be sponsoring the 2012 Bockfest homebrew competition on Saturday March 3rd. This Bock-only competition will be held at The Christian Moerlein Brewery, 1621 Moore St., Cincinnati Ohio and is part of the weekend long celebration of all things Bock.

Categories: The Bockfest Competition is strictly limited to the following categories as defined in the 2008 BJCP Style Guidelines.
5A – Maibock/Helles Bock
5B – Traditional Bock
5C – Doppelbock
5D – Eisbock
15C – Weizenbock
22* – Smoked and Wood Aged (bocks)
23* – Specialty (bocks)

* Base style must be 5A, 5B, 5C, 5D, or 15C and must be clearly indicated on the entry.

Registration is OPEN at http://bockfest.brewcompetition.com

We are currently looking for entries, judges, and stewards for the event. The competition is BJCP-sanctioned, and BJCP points will be awarded. Additional information and online registration for entries/judges/stewards is available at http://bockfest.brewcompetition.com Information for the Cincinnati Bockfest celebration including the parade, brewery tours, music, and venues can be found at www.bockfest.com.

Entry Information: All entries must indicate both a category number and sub-category letter in addition to a written description of the style. All entries will be judged according to the appropriate sub-category style guidelines. However, categories may be combined with related categories for the purpose of awarding prizes. Multiple entries per style are allowed.

Entry Fee: The Bockfest Competition is $6.00 for the first entry and $4.00 for additional entries. Entries must be paid for at time of registration via PayPal.

Eligibility and Registration: Anyone may enter. Beer must be entered under the names of all brewers who participated in making the beer. Beers brewed in commercial licensed facilities are ineligible. Must pre-register online. Entry deadline is Friday, February 24, 2012.

Entry Requirements: THREE 10 to 14 oz. brown or green bottles are required for each entry. Kegs, 2-liters, and bottled entries may be pre-registered and hand carried by a judge or steward. Flights will be fixed prior to the event, so no late entries will be accepted.

Mailing/Drop-off Instructions: Please print out the entry labels and attach to each bottled entry with a rubber band. Print out the completed registration form and include with your entry fees. Entries must be received between the dates of 2/10 and 2/24, unless they are pre-registered and hand carried by a judge or a steward.

Awards: Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place for each category (to be determined based on the numbers of entries in each style, etc.). An additional prize will be awarded for “Best Bock Beer” (BOS).

Special Prize: The Christian Moerlein brewing company will select one entry from the Traditional Bock (5B) category to be used as the recipe for a 2012 special Bock release.

BBL February Meeting: Q&A with “Ohio Breweries” author Rick Armon

February 17, 2012 — 7-11pm at Norwood Community Center

Author Rick Armon will visit and speak with us about his adventures and give insight into his tours of Ohio’s 49 breweries and brewpubs at the February Club Meeting. In his book, Armon offers information on tours, takeout, food, types of beer brewed at each site and the author’s pick of the best beer to try for each brewery. The book also features details on Ohio’s beer festivals, Winking Lizard’s World Beer Tour, and the Ohio Craft Brewers Association.

Books will be available for purchase at the meeting. Rick is coming to us from Akron and also offering this presentation for free. As a Bloatarian Thank You we think it would be very kind if members/attendees would bring one bottle of their best homebrew (labeled with style, brewers name, etc) to the meeting to send home with Rick.

About the Author: Rick Armon is a Cleveland native who currently lives in Akron, Ohio, where he writes about beer for the Akron Beacon Journal at the newspaper’s beer blog (www.beer.ohio.com), which focuses on Ohio beer news. He has been a newspaper reporter for more than twenty years and was beer columnist at the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle for five years. He homebrews in his spare time.

Cincinnati Beer Week kicks off with local brewers presentation

BBL’s own Jason Roeper of Rivertown Brewing Company is going to kick off Cincinnati Beer Week with a presentation at Arnolds, on Monday, February 6th. The presentation will focus first on sensory analysis of beer, and the second half will cover what it takes to start a craft brewery. There is some social time before the presentation at 6:00, with the formal presentation starting at 7:00. For more information contact Jason at Rivertown at 513-827-9280.

Our brewing brethren from the Cincinnat Malt Infusers along with the folks at Cincy Winter Beerfest have teamed up to bring Cincy it’s newest homebrew competition! Join in the fun on February 11th as the event will coincide with the 5th Annual Cincy Winter Beerfest. The All-American Ale Homebrew Competition will be an event that you won’t ever want to miss! BBL Holiday Social

Join us as we gather to revel in chaos and toast to another successful and fun year of BBL activities on Friday, January 13, (yes, Friday the 13th!) 2012.

Bring a dish and beer to share. Of course, beer and food pairings always welcome along with foods made with beer.

If you wish to participate in the bottle exchange bring a wrapped 750ml bottle or equally awesome 22oz beer.

The kitchen will be available along with plenty of plugs for crockpots, etc.
