Bloatarian Open 2015

April 15, 2015

The Bloatarian Open is upon us!

The Bloatarian Open is a BJCP/AHA sanctioned Club-Only Competition. You must be a paid-in-full BBL member to enter a beer into the competition.  In order to encourage new members to enter beers and get feedback that will hopefully increase the quality of your future beers, the entry fee is waived for new members (joined after September 1, 2014).  Do not register your entries until you receive the discount code from the Competition Coordinator. Not yet a member? First Year Members can enter a maximum of 10 entries in the competition FREE with your paid 2015 membership.

This year’s competition will take place on Saturday, May 16th at the Norwood Community Center

Registration opens April 16th and you MUST finalize your entries online by Wednesday, May 6th at 5pm. Please drop off or ship entries to the designated locations by Wednesday, May 13th at 5pm. Entries may not be hand carried to the competition except by participating judges or stewards.  However, irregular packaging such as kegs and plastic bottle entries may be hand carried to the competition for the standard $10 fee.

REGISTRATION IS ONLINE ONLY at http://bloatopen.brewcompetition.com – REGISTER NOW!

On-site check-in begins at 9:30AM. Judging begins around 10:30AM, hopefully earlier if hand carried entries are low. We will take a short break for lunch and hope to finish the main judging by 4pm.

The competition is open to all BJCP categories. Meads and Ciders are not eligible for Best of Show.

WANT TO JUDGE OR STEWARD? Register as a Judge or Steward on the site above! Simple as that.

You DO NOT need to be a Bloatarian member to judge/steward, and you DO NOT need to be a certified BJCP judge to judge. With a competition this large (200+ entries last year) we can never have enough volunteers, so sign up today!

Even if you’re not stewarding or judging, come by and socialize afterward and find out who won Best of Show. The awards ceremony will take place as soon as we have the scores tabulated. After the competition is over we will be grilling burgers and brats, and I think there might even be some beer left over to drink!

1. If you are judging or stewarding, arrive between 9:30AM—10:00AM to register your entries at Norwood Community Center  (if you have not already made prior arrangements for your entries).

2. New members entering beers will need to pay 2015 dues on day of competition for a  BBL membership.

3. All entries (bottled, kegged, pressurized plastic bottles, hollowed coconuts or otherwise) must be labeled when delivered. Print your labels after you have submitted your entry and BEFORE registration ends. Affix to your entry vessel with rubber bands only.

If you can, please bring a side dish to share as we will be grilling for dinner and hanging out after the awards ceremony.

Competition Overview

For those unfamiliar with a homebrew competition, the basic idea is to collect entries from a wide range of brewers. Once all entries have been collected, they are sorted into 15-20 style-based groups that we call “flights.” On the day of the competition, 2-3 judges will be assigned to each flight and sample each of the entries individually while completing a score sheet. Once all beers have been scored, the winner from each flight (typically the top scoring beer) progresses to a second round where the most experienced judges decide an overall competition winner or “Best of Show.”

It’s important to note that most competition entrants won’t actually be present on the day of the competition. Instead, competition day is mostly significant for the competition organizers, judges, and stewards.
