May Meeting – Bloat Open 2016

May 21, 2016 – 9-AM-5PM at The Eddy

Entry Registration closes May 11th at 11:55PM, and Judging Registration open through Friday, 5/13/16 at 11:55 PM. Sign up and judge!

The Bloatarian Open is a BJCP/AHA sanctioned Club-Only Competition. You must be a paid-in-full BBL member to enter a beer into the competition. Not yet a member? First Year Members can enter an unlimited number of entries in the competition FREE with your paid 2016 membership.

This year’s competition will take place on Saturday, May 21st at the The Eddy

Entries may not be hand carried to the competition except by participating judges or stewards. However, irregular packaging such as kegs and plastic bottle entries may be hand carried to the competition.

REGISTRATION IS ONLINE ONLY at http://bloatopen.brewcomp.com/ – REGISTER YESTERDAY!
On-site check-in begins at 8:30. Judging begins around 9:30. We will take a short break for lunch and hope to finish the main judging by 4pm.

The competition is open to all BJCP categories. Meads and Ciders are not eligible for Best of Show.

WANT TO JUDGE OR STEWARD? Register as a Judge or Steward on the site above! Simple as that.

You DO NOT need to be a Bloatarian member to judge/steward, and you DO NOT need to be a certified BJCP judge to judge. With a competition this large (200+ entries last year) we can never have enough volunteers, so sign up today!

Even if you’re not stewarding or judging, come by and socialize afterward and find out who won Best of Show. The awards ceremony will take place as soon as we have the scores tabulated.

Instructions:

1. Arrive between 8:30 and 9:30 to register your entries at The Eddy (only kegs and plastic bottle with carbonator caps are eligible for hand carried entries. All other entries must be dropped off at one of the specified drop off locations).

2. New members entering beers will need to pay 2016 dues on day of competition for a BBL membership.

3. All entries (bottled, kegged, pressurized plastic bottles, hollowed coconuts or otherwise) must be labeled when delivered. Print your labels after you have submitted your entry and BEFORE registration ends. Affix to your entry vessel with rubber bands only.

If you can, please bring a side dish to share as we will be grilling for lunch and hanging out after the awards ceremony.

May 13th-15th Germania Society Maifest – Our club has been invited to participate in the opening ceremonies. If anyone would like to coordinate or join, contact Joe!

May 29th – Beer and Deer at the Westendorf’s – Annual Memorial Day Weekend Party hosted by Rob and Roxanne – Rain or Shine! Starts at 2, Main food at 5. Sides appreciated, Beer appreciated! Bring a chair.  Children are welcome, but you must leave with as many as you came with.  Please park on the street, but you may drop off/pick up at top of driveway.  10296 Deerhollow Ln, 45252. 513-245-1224.

Dues are Due!

Dues are due.  Mkay?

Let’s face it…if you haven’t paid your dues yet, you have some problems. Like being ineligible for Bloat Open. Or maybe we’ll make you drink a Gerdes beer the next time you show up unpaid to a meeting…

Club membership dues are now due for the 2016 calendar year. If you were a new member last year and joined starting in September, your 2015 membership payment was applied to the 2016 membership and you are already paid up. For everyone else, your annual membership payment is due.

If you are a new member and aren’t sure if you’re paid up, we will have an up to date listing of everyone’s status on the sign-in sheet at the meeting. If you know you still need to pay, you can go directly to our membership renewal page on our website right now and pay through Paypal. It will only take a few minutes to complete. The link will open in a new tab so you won’t even lose your place in the newsletter.

Remember, if you’re not as new member, your dues must be paid to enter the Bloat Open!

Competition Coordinators Needed!

The Competition Coordinator spot for Bockfest is open once again and the current Coordinator for Bloat Open and Beer and Sweat is looking for a successor.  It’s a great way to help out the club, help give other home brewers a chance to get feedback on their beers, and rack up some BJCP points (non-judging, that is).  If you’re interested in running one of these fine competitions, reach out to Aaron Marcheski.

Club Brewing Demonstrations and Beer Education Programs

The club has been receiving a large number of requests lately for brewing demos and beer education programs. In the past we have had a small number of people that would take care of these requests, but now that the requests are coming from far and wide throughout the tri-state area, we now have a need to call on our membership to ask for volunteers who would be willing to lead some discussions and beer education events. If you are interested in speaking when these events come up, please talk to a board member or officer so that we can take your name and contact information. A power point presentation and/or discussion materials can be provided if needed.

BBL Membership Cards

As you’ve probably seen in our member benefits, you can receive a 10% discount on supplies at local homebrew supply stores when you show your Bloatarian membership card.  But to do that, you first need to renew or become a member! Renew or Join today…

Flanders Red Solera

The club has participated in various group brew barrel projects in the past.  About two years ago we started a Flanders Red Solera.  The idea behind a Solera is that you periodically remove some beer from the barrel and then add more new beer into the barrel.  Theoretically the Solera can keep going for years.  It took some time for the beer to initially sour, but we have begun the beer cycling process.

In general, participants provide 5 gallons to put in the barrel and then later receive about 4 gallons back out.  Our plans are to draw from the barrel once per month.  At that rate, a person who adds to the barrel will be drawing their share from the barrel one year later.

Dave Harsh has agreed to be the point of contact for the barrel (thanks Dave!). If you are interested in contributing beer to the barrel, let Dave know ASAP and get that beer in there!

For those of you who are interested, here’s the Flanders Red recipe we used.  This came direct from Brian St. Claire and it is the recipe he used for his Flanders Red which took Runner-Up Best of Show at the 2007 National Homebrew Competition.

Bourbon Barrel Flanders Red

5 gallons
OG: 1.054
IBU: 12
5 lb vienna
1 lb carahell
1 lb cara vienna
1 lb aromatic
8 oz special B
1.5 lb flaked corn
handful UNCRUSHED carafa III in sparge for better color, optional
1 oz Mt Hood flowers at 3.7% AA at 45 min (may substitute with another equivalently low %AA Noble hop; check first)
Wyeast # 3763 Roselare yeast in 1000 ml starter

mash in at 156 degrees for 90 min, boil 80 min, chill to 69, oxygenate one min, ferment in glass then add to barrel when yeast drops out (20 days.)
